As professionals, we are always looking for ways to balance our work and personal pursuits. I found myself looking for a resource to help me, when I found a book by Eric Partaker, a CEO Coach, called “The 3 Alarms” system, which offers a straightforward approach to improving one’s health, wealth, and relationships. In it, I discovered that this powerful method provides a relevant framework for personal and professional growth especially for those of us in customer-facing roles.

The 3 Alarms concept is simple yet effective: set three daily alarms on your phone, each corresponding to one of the three key areas of life – health, wealth, and relationships. These alarms serve as reminders to focus on being your best self in each area throughout the day. By consistently encouraging intentional behavior, this system helps create a framework for achieving peak performance in all areas of life.

In this article, I will show you how I have incorporated the 3 Alarms method. Let’s dive in!

The Healthiest You

Partaker emphasizes the importance of prioritizing our health, as it forms the foundation for success in other areas of life. For professionals like us, maintaining good health is crucial for managing stress, staying energized, and delivering great service to customers.

The first alarm in Partaker’s system is designed to remind us to focus on our health. Here’s how I’ve implemented this in my daily routine:

I set a morning alarm labeled “Wellness Warrior.” This serves as a powerful reminder for me to make health-conscious decisions throughout the day.
I start my day with exercise. Even a quick 15-minute workout or a brisk walk can set a positive tone for the day.
I make mindful food choices. I avoid processed foods and opt for nutritious meals that fuel my body and mind.
I take regular breaks during my workday to stretch, move, or practice deep breathing exercises.
I prioritize sleep by setting a consistent bedtime and creating a relaxing pre-sleep routine.
I’ve found that incorporating these habits has led to increased energy levels, improved focus during customer calls, and better stress management when dealing with challenging situations.

The Wealthiest You

The second alarm in Partaker’s system focuses on wealth creation and professional growth. This translates to building strong relationships with customers and teammates as well as taking charge of your professional development.

Here’s how I have applied this concept:

I set an alarm for the start of my workday labeled “Customer Success Superstar.” This reminder helps me approach my work with intention and excellence.
I begin each day by tackling my most important tasks first. This “eat the frog” approach ensures I make progress on critical projects before getting caught up in reactive work.
I practice single tasking to improve focus and productivity. I avoid multitasking during customer calls or when working on important deliverables and practice active listening.
I show appreciation regularly. I thank my customers for their business and acknowledge my teammates’ contributions.
I schedule regular check-ins with key customers and team members to maintain strong connections.
I implement a weekly review (usually on Sunday) to assess my progress, celebrate wins, and plan for the upcoming week.
I continuously invest in my professional development by learning new skills, listening to webinars, staying updated on industry trends, and seeking networking opportunities.
I set clear, measurable goals (SMART Goals) for myself (and my team), and regularly track my progress.
By focusing on these wealth-building habits, I’ve found that I can drive better results for my customers, grow professionally, and open up new opportunities.

The Most Loving You

The third alarm in Partaker’s system reminds us to nurture our relationships, both personal and professional. In life, relationships are everything!

Here’s how I have become the most loving version of myself:

I set an evening alarm labeled “Best Engaged Listener” to shift my focus from work to “home”.
I create boundaries between work and personal life. When my “engaged listener” alarm goes off, I make a conscious effort to disconnect from work and be present with my family or friends.
I practice active listening during conversations with my loved ones or during networking. I give my full attention and avoid interrupting or formulating responses while others are speaking.
I show appreciation regularly. I express gratitude to my family and friends.
I schedule regular check-ins like lunch or coffee with friends and attend networking events to maintain strong connections.
I practice empathy in all my interactions. I try to understand others’ perspectives, especially when dealing with difficult conversations.
By focusing on building and maintaining strong relationships, I’ve been able to create a supportive network that contributes to both personal happiness and professional success.

Implementing the 3 Alarms System

Now it’s your turn! To put Partaker’s system into practice, follow these steps:

Set three daily alarms on your phone, each corresponding to one of the three areas: health, wealth, and relationships.
Label each alarm with a phrase that reminds you of your best self in that area, such as “Healthiest Me,” “Customer Success Pro,” or “Loving Partner/Friend.”
When each alarm goes off, take a moment to reflect on how you can be your best self in that area for the next few hours.
Use these alarms as triggers to switch your mindset and behavior, helping you segment your day across the three crucial areas of life.
Regularly review and adjust your alarm times and labels as needed to fit your changing schedule and priorities.
The power of the 3 Alarms system lies in its simplicity and its ability to encourage intentional behavior throughout the day. By consistently reminding yourself to focus on health, wealth, and relationships, you create a framework for achieving peak performance in all areas of life.

Remember, the goal is not perfection but progress. I’ve been practicing this for about 6 months now. Some days I’ll hit the mark in all three areas, while other days I struggle. The key is to use these alarms as gentle reminders to realign with your best self and make conscious choices that move you closer to your goals.

By implementing the 3 Alarms, you’re taking a proactive approach to personal and professional growth. Over time, you’ll find that these intentional behaviors become habits, leading to sustained improvements in your health, wealth, and relationships. This, in turn, can make you a more effective professional and a happier, more fulfilled person.
